Rats or mice? Droppings, noise and damage compared
Knowing whether you have rats or mice matters, because the two are treated and proofed differently. The good news is they leave different clues, and the droppings alone usually give it away.
The quickest way to tell rats from mice is the droppings: rat droppings are large, dark and capsule-shaped (up to around 12mm), while mouse droppings are small, thin and rice-like (2 to 4mm). Rats are bigger, cause heavier gnawing damage and make louder noises, and need larger entry gaps; mice are smaller, squeeze through tiny gaps and leave far more, smaller droppings. Getting the identification right shapes the treatment and, especially, the proofing.
Droppings: the fastest tell
Rat droppings are large, dark and shaped like a capsule or grain of rice scaled up, often up to about 12mm, and tend to cluster along walls and runs. Mouse droppings are tiny, 2 to 4mm, thin and pointed, and there are usually far more of them, scattered wherever the mice travel. If you can see the droppings clearly, they answer the question.
Noise, damage and behaviour
| Rats | Mice | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Large body, up to ~25cm plus tail | Small, ~7-10cm plus tail |
| Droppings | Large, dark, capsule-shaped (up to ~12mm) | Tiny, thin, rice-like (2-4mm) |
| Noise | Louder scratching, gnawing, scurrying | Light scratching, faster patter |
| Damage | Heavy gnawing; cables, structure | Nibbling; packaging, cables |
| Entry gap | Larger gaps and holes | Squeeze through very small gaps |
Why the difference matters
Treatment approach, bait choice and placement differ between the two, but proofing is where it matters most: mice exploit far smaller gaps than rats, so proofing a property against mice is a finer job. Identifying the rodent correctly means the proofing actually keeps it out.
Not sure? Get it identified
If the signs are unclear, take a photo of the droppings beside something for scale, or book a survey; a technician will confirm the species and recommend treatment. For rats, see our rat control service.
Frequently asked questions
-
How can I tell rat droppings from mouse droppings?
Size. Rat droppings are large, dark and capsule-shaped, up to about 12mm, usually clustered along walls. Mouse droppings are tiny, 2 to 4mm, thin and pointed, and far more numerous. The difference in size is the clearest sign. -
Do rats and mice need different treatment?
The treatment approach and bait placement differ, but proofing matters most: mice fit through much smaller gaps than rats, so sealing a property against mice is a finer job. Correct identification makes the proofing effective. -
Can I have both rats and mice?
It is possible, though rats will often drive mice out of a shared space. A survey confirms which rodents are present and the right response, especially for proofing.
