Preparing your home for a flea treatment

Before a flea treatment, vacuum all carpets, rugs and floors thoroughly (which also triggers dormant pupae to hatch so the treatment can reach them), wash pet bedding and any washable throws on a hot wash, and clear the floors so the technician can treat under and around furniture. Remove or cover fish tanks and pet food, and move small items off the floor. During the treatment, keep pets and people out of the rooms as advised. Afterwards, stay off the treated floors until they are dry, then resume regular vacuuming for a few weeks. This is essential, because it draws out pupae as they hatch so the treatment finishes the job.

A professional flea treatment works best when the home is ready for it. A little preparation before the technician arrives, and the right follow-up afterwards, makes the difference between clearing the fleas in one go and needing a second visit. Here is exactly what to do.

Before the visit

  • Vacuum every carpet, rug and hard floor thoroughly, including under furniture and along skirting, then empty the vacuum into an outside bin.
  • Wash all pet bedding, and any washable throws or covers the pet uses, on a hot wash.
  • Clear the floors: pick up toys, clothes and clutter so the whole floor can be treated.
  • Move small furniture where you can, so the technician can reach under and behind it.
  • Cover or remove fish tanks and pet food, and note any sensitivities to the technician.

Why vacuuming first matters

Vacuuming before treatment does two jobs. It removes a lot of the eggs, larvae and flea dirt, and, crucially, the vibration and warmth stimulate dormant pupae to hatch. Pupae are the stage treatments struggle to reach, so triggering them to emerge means the treatment can hit the newly hatched fleas. Skipping the vacuum leaves protected pupae to hatch later and restart the problem.

During and straight after

Follow the technician's instructions on keeping pets and people out of the treated rooms and staying off the floors until they are dry. Do not vacuum immediately after treatment if advised not to, so the treatment stays in place to do its work. The technician will explain the specifics for the products used and your home.

The weeks after: keep vacuuming

This is the step people skip, and it is essential. For a few weeks after treatment, vacuum regularly, daily at first, because pupae continue to hatch over that period, and each vacuum both removes fleas and triggers more pupae to emerge where the treatment can reach them. Regular vacuuming for a few weeks is what turns a good treatment into a complete clearance. Elis carries out flea treatments across Ireland; see flea treatment and why fleas come back after treatment for the pupae problem.

Frequently asked questions

  • How should I prepare for a flea treatment?

Vacuum all carpets and floors thoroughly, wash pet bedding on a hot wash, clear the floors and move small furniture so everywhere can be treated, and cover or remove fish tanks and pet food. Vacuuming first also triggers dormant pupae to hatch so the treatment can reach them.

  • Should I vacuum before or after a flea treatment?

Both, but differently. Vacuum thoroughly before, to remove eggs and trigger pupae to hatch. After treatment, follow the technician's advice, often not straight away, then resume regular vacuuming for a few weeks to draw out hatching pupae so the treatment finishes them off.

  • Do I need to leave the house during a flea treatment?

You and your pets should stay out of the treated rooms and off the floors until they are dry, as the technician advises. You do not usually need to vacate the whole home for long; the technician will explain the specifics for the products used.
