Woodworms Treatment

We may refer to them as Woodworm, but woodworms are actually the wood eating larva of various species of beetles including the Common Furniture Beetle, the House Longhorn Beetle and the Death Watch Beetle which are all commonly found in Ireland.

The Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium Punctatum) is small ( 3-5mm in length and dark red in colour with a prothorax resembling a monk’s cowl, it is by far the most common cause of damage encountered in homes, most commonly in the sapwood of softwood and European hardwoods. The Deathwatch Woodworm Beetle ( Xestobium rufovillosum) is larger – 8mm in length, chocolate brown in colour with patches of yellowish hairs. It generally attacks oak but will attack softer woods if well rotten.

How to spot Woodworms

The Common Furniture Woodworm Beetle, the House Longhorn Beetle and the Death Watch Beetle cause damage to wood by boring tiny holes in the surface of the wood. You may spot round holes about 1.5 – 3mm diameter in wooden structures such as panelling, furniture, floorboards. Extensive tunnelling will be evident, lots of frass, which is ‘bun’ shaped and easily visible without any magnifying equipment. Exit holes can be found all year round but are most often formed in early Summer to late Autumn – May – Oct). The tunnels in the timber are the result of boring woodworm larvae and the ‘dust’ that can sometimes be viewed is ‘bore dust’ created by the Woodworm beetle as it emerges from the timber.

Woodworms are wood eating larvae which eat through wood leaving small round holes – up to 3mms in diameter. Left untreated, woodworm has the potential to develop into a serious issue, it has the potential to destroy wooden floors, wooden beams, joists and furniture so it is important to have it reviewed and treated.
